What is the reason Australian men wait so long to take care of their hair loss?

I often see young men I know I can help, but they don’t have the confidence to take the first step. I think what makes them hesitant is they are unaware of how good their options are if they take action early. They may be thinking it doesn’t work for them, or they’re not suitable, or they just haven’t got the right information or seen the results I’ve seen. In their mind, they’re just thinking they have to suffer.

Typically a young man will wear a baseball cap, and then they get very accustomed to wearing the hat. Then they start to feel uncomfortable not wearing the hat, or they might just shave their head and think “It’s not going to bother me.” And for the guys that are comfortable shaving their head, that works for a while. Then what happens is their hair loss gets worse and worse, and the difference between the hair on the sides and back and the top becomes even more noticeable even when they’re shaving their head, because you get almost like a five o’clock shadow where there is hair, and shiny where there is no hair.

So it does work for a little while, but then they come back and see me. And eventually when they do decide to go ahead, it’s more difficult, more time consuming, and more expensive. And they can’t have quite as good a result as they could have had if they’d come earlier.

What’s the difference between a man who comes in sooner rather than later in their hair loss process?

Their expectations are going to be different, because realistically, when you come in later, we’ve got a lot less hair to work with.

If you act earlier, it’s a very easy, quick procedure. It’s non invasive if you’re catching it early as well. Somebody can come in and have their three months’ worth of treatment, finish the treatment plan, and then look like a better version of themselves versus somebody that has no hair left and then suddenly, they have a full head of transplanted hair.

Then they’ve got things to deal with out in society, with people asking questions or wanting to know what they’re up to, and they’re sort of forced to talk about it. Whereas catching it early, there’s no indicators that you’re doing treatment. The cost is much lower, the outcome is much better, and you can do it privately. You can even do it at home, if you wish. You don’t have to come into the clinic.

One thing I saw was a young man with very low confidence. And when you have a young man with low confidence, it affects every single part of his life… the confidence to go for that good job, the confidence to meet a partner. This young man’s personality after he had regrown his hair was just over-the-top in comparison to when I saw him three months ago.

In the beginning, he was quite shy, concerned. His self esteem was taking a little bit of a hit. And then three months later, he actually looked like a completely different person. Even just the way he interacted with our team… happy, and bubbly, and full of character, which is just a totally different person to what he was three months before.
